Enjoy Fall Foliage at Lopstick

Each fall, the woodlands of New England put on one of the greatest shows on Earth as the leaves change from green to brilliant shades of red, orange and yellow. As one of the first regions in New England where the leaves begin to turn, the forests around Lopstick offer visitors the chance to get a head start on leaf-peeping season.

Located roughly 80 miles north of the White Mountains, autumn arrives early in Pittsburg, New Hampshire. The leaves begin to turn around Labor Day and peak during the last two weeks of September – nearly two weeks ahead of most of the state.

Visitors to Lopstick at this time of year have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the autumn colors. One great option is climbing to the top of Magalloway Mountain, one of the region’s highest peaks at 3,360 feet. From its summit, visitors can enjoy expansive views of the surrounding woodlands. Another great fall hike is the trail to Fourth Connecticut Lake – the source of the Connecticut River. The trail follows the international boundary at times and offers beautiful views of the area. Leaf-peepers can also get a great view of the fall foliage atop Murphy Dam on Lake Francis.

Paddling trips are another great way to enjoy the autumn colors. Pittsburg has plenty of scenic lakes and ponds surrounded by forests and tree-covered hills and mountains. Among the best places to view the fall foliage from a canoe or kayak are East Inlet and First Connecticut Lake.

Of course, you can also take in the scenery on four wheels. Renting an ATV and exploring miles of surrounding trails and forests is an exciting way to experience autumn in New England. Just keep in mind that the ATV trails close in Pittsburg on September 30, 2017. You can also take in the scenery with a leisurely car ride. A cruise along GP Boulevard offers beautiful scenery. Drivers can also enjoy the colorful surroundings along the heavily-wooded Moose Alley section of Route 3. Moose begin their “rut” in early- to mid-September, making this the best time of year to see bull moose with their antlers at their biggest.

Perhaps best of all, the price is right. Unlike most other places, Lopstick does not raise its rates during the fall foliage season. So visitors can take advantage of the same great rates at this popular time of year.
