Welcome our two new fishing guides

Lopstick’s team of experienced fly fishing experts has grown by two! On your next visit, be sure to stop by Lopstick Outfitters to say hello, or to book one for an enjoyable (and usually successful) day on the water.

Paul Starring

Paul Starring - Lopstick Fishing GuidePaul Starring has a love of the outdoors, but fly fishing is his favorite pastime. Paul grew up in Littleton, NH where he lives with his wife and three daughters. He spent a lot of his childhood spin fishing for bass, perch, and pike, but when given a fly rod in his teens he fell in love with fly fishing. His new hobby led him to explore the waters around his hometown and the Great North Woods, in pursuit of trout.

As a Licensed NH Fishing Guide and a Registered Maine Guide, Paul has had the opportunity to teach others the excitement of fly fishing and show them the beauty of the North Country. He has often been heard saying, “I enjoy watching someone catch a fish almost as much as I enjoy catching them myself.”

When not fishing, Paul spends his time logging firewood off his land (winter is always coming), growing vegetables, and playing outdoors with his daughters. He also enjoys hiking, canoeing, and snowshoeing. If you ask him about some of the things he has on his “bucket list”, most of them will be places he wants to fish, but to him nothing compares to New Hampshire.

“I’m blessed to be able to live in such a beautiful place and spend so much time enjoying it!”

Chuck DeGray

“Fly fishing is not just a hobby with me…it’s a way of life.”

That’s Lopstick’s new fishing guide and resident fly-tyer, who just joined our staff of expert fishing guides and teachers.

Chuck has been fly fishing and tying flies since he was eleven years old. He grew up in Connecticut and learned the basics of the sport fishing on the Farmington and Housatonic Rivers in central Connecticut. In addition to trout, Chuck and his family would pursue stripers and blues along the Rhode Island coast and salt ponds during their summer vacations.

Chuck has lived in the Great North Woods in Pittsburg since 1990 and has been chasing the trout and salmon here since then. He has fished the upper Connecticut Rivers, wading and drift-boating, for more than 28 years, and it’s safe to say he knows where most of the best spots are.

In his spare time, Chuck will search new waters in Vermont and New Hampshire, and even up in Quebec, looking for pike and other species. Where does he go on vacation? Fishing, of course: he loves to make trips down to Andros Island in the Bahamas, one of the world’s great fishing grounds for the explosive bonefish.

Chuck DeGray has also logged thousands of hours at his bench, tying all manner of fly species.

“I consider myself very lucky to be able to turn the things I most love doing — tying flies and fishing our local rivers and streams– into a career as a professional guide and commercial fly tier,” Chuck said. “And I’m grateful I can help pass on the things that I have learned over the years to the guests of Lopstick and their families and friends.”

Please stop by and welcome Chuck on your next visit to Lopstick.
